We’re a small company with big ideas. In one of our latest project, we were tasked to integrate electronics into compact inventory-tracking system. We worked with two RFID readers to power it: Impinj’s enterprise-grade R700 and FAVEPC’s embedded FS-GM704 module. Though both excel at reading industry-standard EPC and TID tags, they target very different audiences—one drops directly into your network, the other becomes part of your custom hardware design.
RFID readers need specialized tags, which come in “read-only” or “read/write” flavors. Most store data in standard formats like EPC or TID, but many offer extra user-programmable memory. You’ll find these tags everywhere—in theft-prevention gates, PCB-level component tagging, and warehouse-scale inventory systems—wherever automatic identification brings speed and accuracy to asset management.
The Impinj R700 is a full-blown Linux computer, ready to deploy in minutes. It ships with SSH, HTTP(S), NTP, DHCP, SFTP, and mDNS services preinstalled, and connects via Ethernet. Power-over-Ethernet support keeps cabling simple, while its rugged housing and high RF output deliver long read ranges ideal for industrial environments. For IT teams needing a turnkey reader that integrates seamlessly with existing networks, the R700 is a clear winner.
By contrast, the FS-GM704 module is designed for embedded-hardware engineers. It ships as a bare-module for PCB mounting, with minimal public documentation—perfect if you want full control over your bill of materials and enclosure. Its four-antenna design offers moderate read range but requires careful antenna tuning and power-management trade-offs. If you’re building a space-constrained or cost-sensitive device from the ground up, the FS-GM704 gives you that flexibility.
Both readers perform best when you tune power levels, dwell times, and antenna orientation to your environment. If you need a plug-and-play, enterprise-ready solution, the Impinj R700 will have you up and running quickly. If you’re crafting a bespoke hardware product and need an integrated module, the FS-GM704 is your go-to. Ready to get started?
